Join friends with bikes and lights: Christchurch Winter Solstice Matariki Night Light Bike Ride 2021

Ian from Fendalton

ccc.govt.nz...
21 June, 5:30pm - 6:15PM, Mickle Gates, North Hagley Park

Cycle Hagley Park on the longest night of the year with bright lights!
The theme this year is to support all new cyclists & families who are riding our new cycleways
Join us on our 10th annual Christchurch NZ Solstice Night Light bike ride!
The purpose is to brightly support safe & healthy and fun cycling for commuters, kids riding to school and for all recreational cyclists.
Meet inside the Park at the Armagh Street Mickle Gates from 5pm for a 5.30pm start.
This is a family-friendly event but organisers urge that you ride with your children as it is pretty dark after 5.30pm. And you must bring at least one bikelight - it gets dark on this ride!
Bling out your bike, helmet and person with as many lights as you can. Prizes for various categories including the brightest bike, of course!
Our bike light ride starts at the Hagley Park Mickle gates ( where Armagh st meets Park Terrace) and we ride counter clockwise around the park on the footpath or road - your choice. Afterwards we will adjourn to the Pegasus Arms on Oxford Terrace and other local eateries for a beer or hot chocolate and discuss how to help make Christchurch a world class safe cycling city!

Poll: Pedestrian access is being extended to the Ōtakaro Avon River - good idea?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Pedestrian access from one of Christchurch’s favourite streets is being extended all the way to the Ōtakaro Avon River. This new 12m-wide pathway will give you a direct, easy route from the street to the river promenade ... perfect for a stroll, a coffee run, or just soaking up the riverside vibes.

We want to know: In your view, what makes a city people-friendly?
What else should our urban areas be doing to support better community connections?

Curious about the full plans? You can check them out here.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”

We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
