Plus: Don't forget to join up to a Foot It Club at www.neighbourly.co.nz..., and go into the draw to WIN one of 50 Micro scooters.

"There's so much food and stuff gone, but we're alive - that's the main thing," says Kaikoura resident Diane Edkins (pictured) who finds out whether her house is given the all-clear while a Red Cross volunteer is with her: www.redcross.org.nz...

Update from North Canterbury

I have spoken with Neighbourhood Support North Canterbury this morning. (Monday 21st, 9.50am)

The immediate need in the area is CO-ORDINATION of response

CURRENT STATUS

· Residents are being checked on and needs assessed/addressed

· Schools are reopening / reopened

· Residents who can, have returned home

· Residents that can’t are with friends/family or being put up

· The community kitchen is operating for those that can’t cook meals

· The right supplies are being distributed to where they are needed.

This rural community is demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness and getting on with it. They are capable of communicating their needs and do not appreciate unnecessary intrusion. They are doing well for the current situation.

If you receive a personal request from friends in North Canterbury needing help, great (I know there are lots of people itching to help). If you have specialist skills/knowledge and time you would like to offer, please register this with Hurunui District Council so they can coordinate this 03-314 8816. Otherwise, the best thing we may be a able to do right now is send our love and make sure we have our own house in order.

ARE YOU READY FOR TSUNAMI - here are some questions for you ...

WILL I NEED TO EVACUATE
If the answer to this is YES…where will you be going…

b) To a welfare centre
c) Simply to higher ground
HOW WILL I GET THERE
a) Am I going by vehicle

c) Is transport provided
WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE WITH ME
1) Medications (Any medications that you take regularly)
2) Important documents (Birth/marriage certificates; Home insurance documents; Drivers’ licence; Passports; Any other documents which you might need)
3) Some sturdy shoes…if you are leaving on foot.
4) Snacks to keep you nourished.
5) Small bottle water.
6) Warm jacket

We're all busy - so how can we get our kids out of the car on the school run?

Jonathan Milne Reporter from Sunday Star Times

Since the 1980s, the proportion of children being dropped off in a car has doubled to nearly 55 per cent. With it has come worsened air pollution, greater congestion, and increased danger as more kids are involved in road accidents. With it has come worsened air pollution, greater congestion, and increased danger as more kids are involved in road accidents. Worse, it has undermined our community cohesion: Schools can and should be the hearts of our communities
.

We're backing schools to set up walking buses and other solutions, with parents and volunteers helping local kids get to class safely.
We wrote to the nation's mayors pleading with them to lower speed limits outside schools, and many have come back to us with expressions of support. We talked to well-known New Zealanders with school-aged kids, and they united behind the campaign.

You can get involved too. We know people are busy, so the Sunday Star-Times and Neighbourly are encouraging families to choose one day a week when they and their kids walk, scoot, cycle - even ride a horse if that's what works for you!

I've chosen Mondays as the days I'll cycle to school with my 6-year-old son. And Neighbourly has set up a special pledge page, where you can choose a day when you will try to Foot It with your kids, talk with others doing the same - and go into the draw to win one of 50 Micro scooters. www.neighbourly.co.nz...
