Then, the FREE workshop on Saturday 10th October held at Coastguard Northshore on Beachfront Lane, Browns Bay, Auckland 0630 from 9am – 4pm could be a good place to start.
The morning will be interactive sessions and include a chance to look at personal and group gear such as VHF radios and Personal Locator Beacons and the chance to discuss what to do in an emergency. The afternoon will deal with planning and going on a short paddle with a skills clinic.
Bring your lunch, boat and paddling kit. If you have a query or are new or from out of town and don’t have any gear contact Shaun Maclaren on 021 2867412 or shaun@kask.co.nz and he’ll endeavour to help you out with equipment to try.
This is a Kiwi Association of Sea Kayaking (KASK) initiative supported by Safer Boating New Zealand.

We thought this was amazing. What a great way to teach your children the value of saving and getting them to add up the money is a fun way to do some maths. You could try using different bottles and different coins here in NZ.

If a road appears in both lists, it will be mostly chip-seal, but with small portions of asphalt at the turning area at the end of the road, or at intersections, etc.
Since 2014/2015, Auckland Transport has been downgrading all roads that carry less than 10,000 vehicles a day to chip-seal. And because they use a smaller, poorer grade of stone than North Shore City used to use for chip-seal, the stones travel a long way, go up driveways, damage cars, cause problems for cyclists, etc.

29 September 2020
We, the undersigned democratically-elected members of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and Kaipātiki Local Board, representing more than 150,000 people across the North Shore, call on the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to:
i. involve North Shore local boards in the discussion and decision-making process around an additional multi-modal Waitematā Harbour crossing;
ii. issue a clear timeframe for the construction of the additional crossing;
iii. prioritise the additional crossing due to the vulnerability of this vital transport connection made clear by recent events.
The Auckland Harbour Bridge is a vital section of State Highway One, connecting the North Shore with the rest of the Auckland region. It is an important link in New Zealand’s economy as it allows the flow of freight and employment across the Auckland region and beyond.
The damage caused to the Auckland Harbour Bridge by the recent incident, and the resulting huge levels of congestion experienced on the North Shore and central city, clearly demonstrates the urgent need for an additional multi-modal solution (including road and rail) to provide the resilience that Auckland needs.
While we acknowledge and thank Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport for the speed with which the disruption was minimised, the recent incident has exposed the economic and societal risk of relying on a single piece of ageing infrastructure. The closure of a number of lanes on the bridge as we wait for permanent repairs has caused significant disruption and stress to businesses and communities.
As local board members, we must be able to share the views of the communities that we represent, and be involved in the decision-making process of major infrastructure in our area.
We therefore request an urgent meeting with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to discuss the above matters regarding an additional Waitematā Harbour crossing.
Yours sincerely,
Members of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board:
Aidan Bennett
Jan O’Connor
Trish Deans
Ruth Jackson
Toni van Tonder

In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be North Shore’s MP.
At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.
Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.
Why does my MP matter?
The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.
