Hi Auckland neighbours,

A leading coronavirus expert is urging the Government to make scanning mandatory at such potential "super-spreader" venues as bars and nightclubs.

The pleas follow figures revealing daily use of the Covid Tracer app has plummeted to a fifth of its peak.

Last Monday, a total of 515,759 scans were recorded nationwide, down from the high of 2.5 million on September 4.

Epidemiologist Dr Michael Baker said the next six months would be a “very dangerous” time for the country with a high risk of an outbreak while waiting for the vaccine roll-out in April.

Clean pathways = lower risk

Falls are the most common way kiwis injure themselves with severity increasing with age. Not only that, but the most likely place for a fall is at home. “Foot slipping/skidding” is a leading cause of these falls and is surpassed only by “loss of balance/personal control”.

In a recent job completed in Devonport (see linked post), a beautiful north-facing staircase and pathways had become slippery with dirt and mold and quite treacherous when wet. Exactly the kind of condition leading to this common injury. The likelihood of slipping has been reduced massively after a couple of hours of careful eco-friendly pressure-washing.

In addition to wearing suitable footwear, aiming to keep outdoor walking surfaces free of materials that compromise traction where it is expected is a good idea - i.e., removal of dirt, oil, moss, mold, oxidation, standing water, etc. Addressing slippery outdoor pathways and stairs is an excellent place to make big advances in reducing unnecessary risk to you, your family, your pets, your neighbours, and other visitors.

There’s more than one win. Clean surfaces often have a more pleasing aesthetic and user experience too - so in addition to safety, there’s that as well.

I'm certain I've seen something like this here in Aotearoa-NZ, but can't for the life of me recall where. It was in the back of the medicine cupboard. Let us know if you've seen, had - or have - one in your home.
