Need a copy of your birth certificate?

Hira Siddiqui from Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga/Eastern Manukau

If you need a copy of your birth certificate you can:

đź’»Apply online using the Certificates Service certificates.services.govt.nz...
📱Call the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) on 0800 22 52 52
✉️Apply by post using the paper application form - BDM93B Request for New Zealand Birth Certificate
đź—ŁOrder your birth certificate in person in Auckland, Manukau, Wellington or Christchurch where there are BDM offices. You'll need photo ID and generally have to book an appointment first.

A standard (plain) birth certificate costs $33 and a decorative birth certificate (forest or beach scene) costs $35. You need to pay by debit or credit card. For those who don't have one of these this sometimes means buying a Prezzy Card, which is a Visa gift card and can be used like a credit card.

It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks for a birth certificate to be issued.

For more information, including what to do if there is a problem with your order or if you cannot afford the cost of ordering your birth certificate, applying for a birth certificate for someone else, registering the birth of a child, or how to apply for your birth certificate if you were not born in New Zealand, go to:
