When bags move like ballerinas

Ballerinas twist, turn and move so gracefully that they often seem other-worldly, but would you ever compare a ballerina to a bag?

In our Carried Away: Bags Unpacked exhibition, artist Isaac Katzoff’s glass bag got itself a nickname of just that: the ballerina. The nickname was given after the bag hinted at graceful movement while it was under the spotlight in the photography studio - it's inner performer was at the ready.

Although the Museum holds many objet d’art (art objects), the beautiful photography and images of the collection are themselves works of art, as this image of Katzoff's bag here is. Museum photographers work behind the scenes to create images of objects that act as both documentation and art.

As Artweek Auckland comes to a close this weekend, we wanted to showcase just one of many of the wonderful objet d'art from within our Applied Arts & Design collection.

Come and see 'the ballerina' for yourself, alongside many other wonderful works of art at Carried Away: Bags Unpacked, on now and free with Museum entry.

MAPURA STUDIOS

Māpura Studios is a neighbourhood art studio who for twenty years has been supporting people living with disability and neurological conditions. Mapura Studios will present the first in a summer series of community events held at Crave Café. There will be a talk by Professor Bronwen Connor alongside the sale of affordable art by Mapura award-winning artists and an acclaimed New Zealand artist.

Crave has been musing for years about how to make Morningside a better place to live. One of the ways they have come up with is to lift the lid on the people of Morningside to share their stories—to help people get to know the diversity and activities of the people of the ‘hood’.

‘Creativity in the Hood’ lifts the lid on

PROFESSOR CONNOR – BEING BRAINY

Bronwen Connor is a Professor in Pharmacology and head of the Neural Reprogramming and Repair Lab at the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research. Bronwen has worked on several strategies for the treatment of multiple neurological disorders.

She has also created an excellent online programme called ‘Being Brainy’ designed to teach primary and intermediate school children about brain function. Bronwen will present ‘Being Brainy’ and the importance of science education in the early school years.

MAPURA ART PURCHASE

Mapura Studios will exhibit a range works by its exceptional artists and introduce Jimmy James Kouratoras, a well known NZ artist. Original works and prints by both Mapura artists and Jimmy James will be for sale. Please see the link below to see Mapura’s winning entry for the 2019 IHC Awards.

Creator and leader of “The Traveling Sewing Box Project”©. Graduated from the University of Auckland with a Masters in Fine Arts; Bachelor of Fine Arts with specialisation in Clothing Design, Whitecliffe College of Art and Design; Certificate in Fashion Communication, London College of Fashion, England. Professor in the Department of Fashion Design in the undergraduate and Master's degree, Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. Throughout her career she has worked in fashion and textiles, working as a designer, clothing buyer, press manager and fashion producer in Argentina and New Zealand.

Judi Lapsley Miller (Wellington artist)

Salvaging waste offcuts from framing material she frames her TinyArt bird prints. The framed photographs then form the central focus of another still life image. This merging of photography and fine art composition invites a compelling discussion on trace, even before her work is traced onto a distant church spire in Auckland. Judi is passionate about the preservation of endangered NZ birds and donates a percentage of her sales to wildlife charities. Two works feature in the show:

1. Still life of framed TinyArt of artwork "Emerging (kākā kura)" 2. Still life of framed TinyArt of artwork "At what cost forever" (tūī)

Gary Silipa

Glen Innes artist Gary returns to Somervell to display his work Bling. Larger than life trinkets made from waste polystyrene and plastic, on a chain, read as a metaphor of values linking in with the thematic exhibition premise, valuing the planet.
