Please check you are up to date against mumps!
The number of cases of mumps continues to increase in Auckland. There have been more than 200 cases reported so far this year. Mumps causes swelling of the salivary glands on one or both sides of the face, cheeks or jaw. People have been hospitalised with swollen testicles and ovaries, which in rare cases can cause infertility.
Mumps is preventable by two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination. In NZ this is normally given at 15 months and 4 years of age. Other countries give it at different ages, and some countries do not include mumps in their routine vaccines.
If you're not sure whether you or your children are up-to-date with vaccinations, including having protection against mumps, call your medical practice. They will be able to assist you or book you in for a free vaccination.
