Oranga Development Update
Hi neighbours, following a meeting with HLC (a wholly-owned subsidiary of HNZ) this morning about the Oranga Development, I can confirm that HLC are aware of current resident concerns, particularly around rehousing issues, safety, the impact on children's education and schooling, and the lack of affordable rental housing.
HLC have met and will continue to meet with community members, leaders, iwi, Auckland Council and the Local Board to discuss this large-scale development.
So what will happen?
HLC will be developing 1000-1200 house in the Oranga area, which is a 10% increase in housing stock. This will include around 400 new state houses, which will be built in the early stages of the development, and 600-800 affordable and market homes that will be built in the latter stages.
HNZ have a rigorous rehousing process that they follow that includes 4 stages. HNZ staff have informed us that they deal with issues of rehousing in a very sensitive manner and understand that families have close connections and strong memories to the current places they live.
Regarding the development and it's impact on schools, HLC have said they are aware that development negatively impacts upon school rolls, funding, staffing, and resources. They are working with the Ministry of Education to make sure that this doesn't.
Please note that HLC are holding their first public open day on the 25 August at the Community Centre in Fergusson Park. If you have any concerns about the development, please do not hesitate to contact me.
