Auckland Council is using DNA testing of dogs, employing "barking advisers" and giving staff body cameras to combat nuisance dogs. The council's annual animal management report shows a 4% reduction in dog attacks and an 18% reduction in roaming dogs over the past financial year.

This followed new council initiatives including creating a team of barking advisors, giving animal management officers body cameras and using DNA analysis to resolve dog attack cases. With the DNA testing, animal management could scientifically link a dog to an attack. The unit is the first in New Zealand to use this technology.

The bark advisers team was created to deal with nuisance barking complaints, of which there were 7149 in the past year. According to the report, the new approach has seen a 13.5 per cent reduction in barking complaints, and fewer repeat calls to noisy dogs.

A friend of mine was ticked for going 85kmh in a 100kmh zone on the Northern Motorway, near Tristram Ave. It was at 10.30pm last Tuesday but she was traveling in the right lane. She was fined $150 and suffered 20 demerit points. The official wording on the fine was "slow vehicle or inconsiderate driving impeded traffic".

I want to know how common it is to be ticketed for traveling too slow under the limit. Has it ever happened to you? And if it has, what were the circumstances around what happened to you, and do you believe what happened was fair?

Your anecdotal information will be used for background research or to complement the story which will include official stats and comment, such as that from Inspector Peter McKennie, who is the Acting National Manager of Road Policing.

Please feel free to email me on Nicole.lawton@stuff.co.nz

Have you been dive-bombed by a magpie this spring?

Kendall Hutt Reporter from North Shore Times

Hi neighbours. It's time to crack out the beanie, hat, helmet or even an umbrella as it's magpie swooping season. Spring marks nesting season, so magpies are highly protective of the young-uns. Our Monarch Butterfly is under threat and this National Gardening Week Kiwis are being called upon to plant butterfly friendly plants to help save the caterpillars when they hatch in Spring and Summer.

Last year saw a national shortage of Swan plants, the main diet of Monarch caterpillars, causing a large number of the population to be wiped out.

Yates is getting behind the drive to avert a similar crisis this year by giving away various free butterfly friendly seeds including Yates new Butterfly Field Mix seeds between 1st and 14th October. Just register here during this time to receive your packet of seeds.

A national planting day will be held on 20th October. Plant a Swan plant or other butterfly friendly plants in your garden, in your neighbour’s garden, at school, in your local community garden – and let’s help Monarch butterflies flourish.

National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature.
