In the late 1800s, New Zealanders were afraid that their ports were open to attack from the Russian navy, these were known as the ‘Russian war scares’. To stop this happening a chain of forts was built around the coast and amongst the most elaborate of these was Fort Takapuna.

Empty of ammunition now the fort has been restored by the Department of Conservation and tour/s will explore the maze of underground tunnels and rooms and tell some of the stories of this fascinating place. This event is part of Conservation Week.

As part of DOC Conservation Week 2017 local historian Dave Veart will be hosting a free guided tour of North Head this coming Sunday 15 October from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

For thousands of years, Maungauika / North Head has stood sentry to the entrance of Auckland Harbour. During that time it was gardened and fortified by Maori, grazed by early European farmers and then in 1885 was turned into New Zealand’s most complex fort. It is a place which can tell many stories, volcanic origins, the arrival of the first waka from Hawaiki, fear of Russian attack, and two World Wars. Bring a torch and explore the tunnels and underground rooms, examine the rare disappearing gun and learn about the men and women who served and worked here. Meet at North Head, summit next to Building 1 (1885 Barracks).
