one’s self-attachment
Self-centeredness and greed give rise to the most intense form of fear.
Though all beings must face death alone, one who is perpetually obsessed with the self and constantly swayed by the adoration of followers shall find the solitude of death unbearable.
If one becomes overly accustomed to the flattery of sycophants—those who eagerly satisfy one’s every whim and caprice—then, upon the stark realization of utter aloneness, one shall be overwhelmed by a fear beyond imagination.
Thus, by lessening one’s self-attachment, one may likewise diminish the severity of this dreadful fear.
