Parking in Ellerslie

Denise Lee MP

Hello Ellerslie neighbours, sorry for the long post below, but it will definitely interest you! The following is an AT press release I received this morning:

***Feedback open on proposal to free up parking in Ellerslie***

To free up parking spaces in Ellerslie, Auckland Transport is proposing changes to on-street parking time limits.

The proposal would mean changing some of the currently unrestricted parking to P120 on sections of the following streets: Cawley Street, Findlay Street, Hewson Street, Ramsgate Street, Amy Street, Main Highway, Ladies Mile, Arthur Street and Robert Street. Feedback on the proposal is open until 16 September.

Around half of the existing unrestricted parking spaces on each street will remain, and the new P120 restrictions would apply from 8am – 6pm, Monday – Friday. The current P120 and P60 restrictions will not change, as will all existing no stopping controls and bus stops.

Ōrākei Local Board Chair, Kit Parkinson, encourages members of the public to provide feedback on the proposal.

“Ellerslie centre is the heart of the village for our residents and businesses, and meeting their needs is important to us. We look forward to hearing what our community have to say on the proposed parking changes.”

AT’s Parking Services and Compliance Manager, John Strawbridge says he receives a lot of complaints about parking issues in Ellerslie, particularly in regards to people from outside of the area parking on these streets and staying there all day.

“Commuters from outside the area taking up parking makes it difficult for residents and people visiting friends or the shops to find a place to park. We conducted an investigation into the current parking situation in Ellerslie and found that more than 85 percent of the spaces are occupied during peak times with some streets as high as 98 percent.

“To make it easier we’re proposing a mix of unrestricted and time-restricted parking which has been proven to be a flexible solution that helps to better manage parking demand while still providing longer-term parking for those who need it.”

As part of the consultation process, AT is holding a drop-in session at Union Post Brew Bar, 124 Main Highway, Ellerslie, on Tuesday 4 September between 3pm – 7pm.
