Bay of Islands Vintage Railway
We are the oldest railway in North Island & the furthest north Vintage Steam Railway.
Kawakawa is the only place in NZ where you can travel along a State Highway in a Train – one of very few places in the world to do this
. Our track goes over the longest curved wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere - Long Bridge, which will soon be newly re-piled to enable our trains to run to Opua … through a historic 80 metre tunnel
.
When complete the extended track will open up the Bay to greater business opportunities to the benefit of everyone in our Community.
Our steam engine Gabriel is unique. She is the only engine of her type left in the world, and the 1st steam engine in the world to run on 1st January 2000.
At 90 years old this year, she needs new mechanical parts to enable her to proudly pull our trains between Kawakawa and Opua.
Funding would enable us to purchase a new injector, which will cost $2,990.00
Some Choice News!

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
