Whangarei Film Society - Screenings for Thursday June 8th
Good People
For Thursday, the 8th June at 6pm we are screening Blueback, an Australian film, based on the book of the same name by Tim Winton.
Our 8pm screening is the film that won Brendan Fraser the Oscar for Best Actor, The Whale.
Both screenings will be in the Expo Hall on the ground floor as our usual venue, the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre, is unavailable.
Blueback
Australia, Drama, 99 mins, Rated PG
Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Radha Mitchell, Ilsa Fogg and Eric Bana
Director: Robert Connolly
Based on Tim Winton's 1997 novella of the same name, Blueback tells the story of Abby, a marine biologist who returns to her seaside hometown to care for her mother, Dora who's recovering from a stroke.
Whilst there, Abby recalls how she first developed her love for the ocean, as well as her aversion to Dora's sometimes extreme behaviour which she put to good effect to protect the pristine bay from developers and commercial fisheries.
During her exploration of the reef, Abby rediscovers a blue groper she knew as a child - nicknamed Blueback - who becomes the key for Abby to see the world through her mother's eyes and allow them a chance to reconnect.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
