Chinese privet - warning
An attractive shrub with paired light green leaves has been popping up everywhere in my parent's garden in Upper Hutt this past year. It is flowering for the first time now and I can now identify it. It has delicate racemes of tiny white, musky scented, 4 petal, two anthered flowers which makes it Chinese privet which is unfortunately a nasty, fast growing, smothering other plants and hard to dig out. Presumably it is blackbirds spreading the berries/seed everywhere. Photo of a spray attached.
