A number of our urban streams and rivers are in poor health, are highly modified or are piped. Poor water quality makes our streams and rivers unsafe to swim and impacts mahinga kai (food).

Our waterways and the life they support are important to lots of people, and I want to understand what you think should be done to make sure future generations are able to enjoy and protect our freshwater.

We need your help in protecting the health and mauri of our waterways, which are under pressure from increasing population. We need solutions that require real change in the way we interact with water if we want it to be safe for our kids. And we need to think long-term about how and who pays for these solutions.

MOA POINT SLUDGE UPDATE – TRUCK MOVEMENTS

We will be adjusting the route due to Island Bay’s Day in the Bay this weekend, with the trucks following an … View moreThanks to the local community for their continued patience and understanding as we continue with our trucking operations from the Moa Point treatment plant and the Southern Landfill.

We will be adjusting the route due to Island Bay’s Day in the Bay this weekend, with the trucks following an alternative route along State Highway 1 and up through Brooklyn (pictured below). Trucks will use this route from 6am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday, with trucks following the existing route outside of these hours. We expect about 5 to 6 trucks each way per hour during this period.

From Thursday through to Sunday, we will also be staggering the truck movements, as well as reducing the number of trucks on the road.

We apologise for any inconvenience this additional traffic may cause, but we are working to prevent the need to discharge the sludge into Cook Strait while we work to repair the pipeline to the Southern Landfill.

Marsden bus - Seatoun,
