The four cities have been under a sprinkler ban that was introduced at the end of a particularly dry November.
Thanks to the response from the community, and in spite of a record hot January, the region’s storage lakes are now in good shape to last for the remainder of summer.
This means restrictions can now be eased to allow for the limited use of garden sprinklers and irrigation systems.
This is a good position to be in, but it’s important that people keep being responsible with water usage.
Sprinklers are actually a relatively wasteful way to water plants, and their use is limited by the garden watering restrictions still in place.
These allow the use of a single sprinkler or irrigation system, between the hours of 6-8 am and 7-9pm only on alternate days according to your house number.
Sprinkler use permitted at:
- odd-numbered houses on odd dates (1st, 3rd, 15th etc)
- even-numbered houses on even dates (2nd, 4th, 18th etc)
only between the hours of 6-8am and 7-9pm.
This restriction level will remain in place until further notice, or the end of Daylight Savings (1 April 2018) – except in Upper Hutt, where this restriction remains in place all year round.
We’d also like to remind people that the easing of restrictions is a good time to check and refill any emergency water storage containers, or to install an emergency tank if you don’t have one yet.
Tips for good watering practice:
- Use a trigger or wand to ensure water goes only where it’s needed
- Concentrate watering on the roots of plants not the leaves
- Use mulch to keep moisture in and weeds out

Joe's suggestion stimulated more than 150 overwhelmingly positive responses. But at the moment, sadly, it's just a plan.
How can we make it a reality? Well, NZTA is responsible for SH1 and that means we have to approach the big boys and girls in the Beehive. Phil Twyford who has ministerial responsibility for "Transport" also has the portfolio for "Housing and Urban Dvelopment" which is the hot potato at the moment so it's likely our crossing will not have crossed HIS desk. But his associate minister for transport, Julie Genter, ALSO looks after health so is the obviously person to take this on.
You may know she is backing the “The Aotearoa Bike Challenge" (which starts today, 1st February) and says...
“A 10-minute ride could be part of your commute to work or a trip to the park with the kids. It’s an achievable goal that will help you feel great and build a positive habit in the new year ahead. This year we hope to see even more New Zealanders get on their bikes with some great prizes on offer for participating, including e-bikes.”
Well a 10 minute bike ride which crossed Cobham Drive could be the end of your commute to work unless some action is take to make it safer. Perhaps, better than factuous prizes, money could be spent on tender documents for "Joe's Bridge".
If you feel strongly about this, contact Julie [Email: j.genter@ministers.govt.nz / +64 4 817 8726] and let's get some action.
