A hungry kārearea played a part in a failed attempt to establish a colony of critically endangered shore birds on Mana Island.
In February the Department of Conservation translocated 29 juvenile tūturuatu, or shore plovers, to Mana, off Porirua, however in July it was reported all 29 birds had vanished. Some were discovered on the mainland, recaptured and placed back on the island with more captive-bred plovers.
Last month it was discovered some had ended up as lunch for a resident kārearea or New Zealand falcon. Others would have been susceptible to being gobbled up by cats, rats and stoats on the mainland.
A team of keen young Petone rugby league players will forfeit their points and risk disqualifying themselves in an upcoming tournament because one of their star players is banned.
The reason? She’s a girl. Aayla Toman, 13, has been told she’s not allowed to play in the u13 boys’ grade in Wellington’s Pacific Youth Cup because of her gender – something that led her club team, the u13 Petone Panthers, to play her ‘illegally’ all season.
New Zealand Rugby League rules state the maximum age for males and females to play in mixed gender full contact rugby league is 12 years of age.

There’s a new exercise class in town! Yes, another one… but this one is special: it’s a falls prevention exercise class for seniors, and it only costs a gold coin. Age Concern Wellington’s Ann Dalziel has started three new weekly classes in Lower Hutt (Knox Church), Khandallah (St Barnabas Church), and Churton Park (community centre). Age Concern Wellington now has 25 Steady as You Go exercise classes running each week around the Wellington Region. From Upper Hutt to Island Bay and over to Whitby, there’s a class near you.
“My balance has improved so much,” says one class participant, “and I’ve made many new friends here.”
These classes are designed to improve strength and balance and help prevent a fall. Steady as You Go classes improve balance and leg strength, flexibility, general fitness, and wellbeing. But most importantly perhaps, these classes are a great way to meet new people.
Classes consist of a combination of sitting, standing and walking exercises, and take around an hour. Call 04 499 6648 or visit www.ageconcernwellington.org.nz... for more information.
Falls are not a natural part of ageing!
