"Understanding Maori Culture"

Imagine moving to a new country where you have no friends or family, no knowledge of the culture or perhaps even the language, and you certainly do not understand who can advise you on how to access very basic services. This is the daunting prospect for many new migrants to Kapiti.

Now imagine you find when you arrive in that country there are not one, but two cultures and languages that you need to understand. Your children start school and you are invited to a Powhiri and asked to take part in the Waiata; And you may be asked to provide Koha. What does this all mean?

To help new migrants better understand Maori culture, CABK is holding an Information Session and lunch on Saturday 9 March between 11.00am and 1.00pm in the Rimu Room, upstairs in Coastlands in Paraparaumu. The lunch is free and open to all migrant groups or individuals. You can tell CABK you are coming beforehand or just turn up on the day.

The lunch will provide an opportunity for new migrants to hear from and meet a local Maori leader who can help them understand Maori history and culture. Gwen Greenham is a respected teacher and elder in the Kapiti Maori community, who will trace the history of the Maori migration to New Zealand and through this story provide advice on lan-guage, customs and traditions.

For further advice about the lunch or if you wish to talk to someone about any issue at all (and we have had questions about just about everything!), just call into CABK upstairs at Coastlands weekdays from 9.00 am to 4.00pm, phone 04 298 4944, or email
kapiti@cab.org.nz .

Hi all!

I am hoping someone might be able to help me...

I park in Athol Crescent just off Boulcott Street in Wellington Central.

On Friday, my car got hit while parked there between 7am and 3.30pm (Black Mazda CX-9).
A note was left but it was on the opposite side of my windscreen so I didn’t see it and it flew away when I needed to use my windscreen wipers.

It appears to have been caused by a high vehicle/truck as the damage is quite high up on my vehicle & this has been confirmed by the Panelbeater I took it to today.

I have tried contacting a handful of Rubbish companies and surrounding businesses as well as walking up the street to see if by chance the note hasn't disappeared forever, to no avail.

I'm appealing for any information or advice that might aid in my search for the driver who was courteous enough to leave a note (something that is quite rare)

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help!

It was interesting to read in the Observer of another Housing New Zealand house standing empty. Equally interesting is KCDC's response.
The shortage of HNZ housing in Kapiti can be laid squarely at the door of the mayor's good friend Jim Bolger and his National government who took a wrecking bar to Housing Corp during the nineties. Along with soaring child poverty, Helen Clark tried very hard to undo the damage done to Housing NZ but it was not that easy to claw back. The genie it seemed was out of the bottle. Not that National stopped there. I thought it was pretty rich of Judith Collins to accuse HNZ of locking people out of their house purchases when they were merely trying to buy back some of the stock Bill English managed to sell off over the last decade.

Like Kiwirail, National seems to have a seek and destroy mission going on with social housing. Mum and Dad landlords will be hurt by it, you see. I'd like to hear from some of those Mums and Dads, but I cant seem to find any. A survey of Wellington landlords I did a few years back revealed that no one in the landlord sector had just one rental. They all had substantial property portfolios. I think the Mum and Dad landlord is a myth. Not that I think KCDC gets out of jail free either. They have the means to free up subdivison regulations and release land that can be built on. They are also able to enforce subdivison conditions to ensure townhouses and other dwellings suitable for our aging population are built, rather than the proliferation of 4-5 bedroom mcmansions. Looks to me like they are sitting on their hands on this one. Is there a term like "greenwash" that applies to social policy, I wonder.
