Thanks so much to the Pyes Pa Community Newsletter, we are once again very grateful to receive your donation and are excited to be able to purchase some new reading books and a new toddler swing. Thank you again for your support.

Earlier this month we joined up with the Oropi playgroup and caught the bus into Tauranga CBD. The tamariki were delighted with the bus trip as they sat giggling together in the back seat. We visited Tauranga library and joined in on toddler time while the older children got to create some art over at a workshop at Tauranga Art Gallery. Finally a quick visit to the waterfront playground and back home on the bus. Great to get out and about exploring with friends.

A number of our older children are moving into Pyes Pa School this year. This a great transition as they know the school grounds from being at Playcentre and know some of the school children already who were previously playcentre kids. We started a new tradition for the children starting school, by creating a beautiful new Korowai where we will sew on a material handprint of each of our departing tamariki, as a way to recognise this journey. We also have a little ceremony and shared morning tea to celebrate.

Our regular Playcentre meeting was held this week, which is a great way to get involved and have a say about the way we run out centre. We started planning our Matariki celebration and looking forward to progress with fixing our deck roof to ensure it will be watertight very soon.

Our library is looking a bit tired, so if you have any old books suitable for children 6 years or under, we would really appreciate these.

Want to join in the fun at Pyes Pa Playcentre, come for a visit - all new families welcome. Sessions run from 9:30-12:00 Tuesday and Fridays.

Does anyone know of someone who does up bicycles for kids less fortunate in Tauranga? I have one here which, with a bit of TLC, will suit a 10-14 year old. Prefer to give to charity, thanks.

We have had way more responses than we expected, so I won't be able to respond to every message right away. But over the next week, we'll aim to be in touch with those we feel we could do a story or some kind of follow up.

I am excited to see the state-of-the-art gymnasium and sports centre looking almost complete at ACG Tauranga, which ACG college will be opening up to the local community. It's looking great!
I hope to see after school clubs such as badminton and volleyball to be held here.

Fingers crossed for a nice new indoor swimming pool this side of town to follow, I'm looking forward to Tauranga Crossing's IMAX cinemas next year too!

The following information has been copied from the ACG website:

The development has been designed to be multi-purpose and to be used not only by the school’s PE department, but also for inter-collegiate sport and the local community at large.

ACG Tauranga principal Shawn Hutchinson says the facility will be an asset for Tauranga.

“We will be reaching out and welcoming sports, cultural and community groups to talk about how we can build long-lasting partnerships – not just about using or hiring a facility, but about making real connections so that our students are a part of the wider community.”

The gym will also provide space for assemblies and school productions, as well as lunch-time and after-school recreational programmes.

The three-level gym will be located at the heart of the ACG Tauranga campus, overlooking the sports fields. The gym floor will be a multi-purpose rubber compound to suit a wide range of codes, including badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball. There will also be sufficient court space for futsal and indoor soccer.

Covered viewing areas overlooking the proposed netball and tennis courts will provide seating for up to 500 spectators. The ground floor will include courts, four changing rooms, and PE staff offices and storage. A fitness centre and open area with kitchen facilities will be housed on the first floor, with three classrooms on the second floor.

Joe Dixon, Futsal Development Officer for Waikato Bay of Plenty (WaiBOP) Football, says the facility will be an asset for the local sporting community.

“Tauranga has some really good facilities, but they are all well used,” Mr Dixon says.

“To have a new, high-quality facility such as this one can only be good for the community – especially as the city continues to grow in population.”

“It’s brilliantly located in an area where the population is rapidly growing. While there are other sporting facilities, it’s great to have this in that area around The Lakes,” says Mr Cronin, who has a grandchild at ACG Tauranga.

“To have this facility being available to the public puts the icing on the cake, and shows the benefits of independent schools being part of the community.”
