It's true that you agreed to a legally binding contract as soon as you drove into the parking lot. Thankfully, New Zealand law protects consumers from the exploitative clauses that corporates love to slip in the fine print.

Under contract law, parking companies can only claim for "the actual and reasonable costs they incurred". Charging $65 for a short overstay in an empty carpark is as far from reasonable as you can get.

Mould and mildew on curtains and upholstery is unsightly, unhealthy, gives off a musty smell and has the potential to stain or eat into fabric. It’s a greedy little fungus that likes to feed on the dust or dirt on your fabrics, or even on the fabrics itself.

Organic fibres are gourmet fare for mildew. This includes animal (protein) fibres such as wool or silk, or plant (cellulose) fibres like cotton, linen or rayon – although man-made fibres are not immune either; all it takes is some dust to gather in the folds of your curtains or creases in your couch, and mildew quickly moves in. Areas near the kitchen are particularly at risk – cooking grease released into the air settles on your soft furnishings, attracting damp and dust, and providing mildew with a tasty snack.

When choosing fabric for your home, you can select a type that resists mildew better than others, such as polyester or viscose. If you love the natural look, there’s no need to give it up – modern blends of man-made fibres can be woven to mimic the look and feel of natural fabric. We offer sheers such as Sierra which are 100% polyester but look like linen, or faux silk like Majestic Silk.

Mildew loves something easy to stick to – a smooth, shiny fabric like Xavier is harder for it to establish itself on, and a good choice if you find that mildew is a problem in your home. You could also try a water repellent fabric such as our upholstery fabrics Sebastian and Palazzo. These are less likely to get damp and encourage mildew growth.

Prevention is the best cure.

A baby boy will only live for a few months without a $100,000 medication that is not funded in New Zealand.

Kaan Hunter was diagnosed with an extremely rare and fatal bone condition, infantile hypophosphatasia, shortly after his birth. Without the medication, Kaan's life expectancy is only four to six months. He is the only one in NZ with this condition.

"Doctors have put in an application to Pharmac to see if he will get accepted, but it's so much money and they said 'don't hold your breath'," the Bay of Plenty mum said.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help buy Kaan some time.

Hundreds of thousands of inexpensive items that pass through the retail giant's checkouts every year, so it's only to be expected there will be recalls – Kmart even has a recalls page on its website, and there are 31 products on the list.

The $55 timber Occasional Chair is the latest casualty, although this is a withdrawal rather than a recall. We don't know the reason for its withdrawal, except Kmart says it is for "a potential quality issue". But what other products have been found wanting?

Introducing the Beachtime Water Blaster Wonder Twins - Walter & Wilbur.
Our first born Walter is the largest of the twins & is comfortable tackling any large jobs. Wilbur is slightly smaller & is able to get into those hard to reach places that his big brother struggles to fit into.
As brothers they have a close working bound & understand that successful house washing requires specialised high volume, low pressure water blasting equipment. No nasty steroids for these boys they follow an extensive maintenance schedule to keep themselves in tip top shape.
Often the Wonder Twins will work in tandem to tackle large scale buildings. However as Walter gets a little jealous of Wilbur we often let him complete houses all on his own to boost his confidence.
These wonder twins run on the finest fuel & only require a dirty house & water to complete their magic.
If you would like to witness this dynamic duo in action you can call them on 021-143-2517 or 0800325 253.
