Papakura High regains trust of community

Ripu Bhatia Reporter from Papakura Courier

A south Auckland school has turned a corner and earned back the trust of the community.

Wednesday marked the end of a government intervention at Papakura High that was launched in 2009.

Student numbers fell from 1500 in 2000 to 550 by 2015, but are now at 900 and growing rapidly.

Papakura High principal Simon Craggs said the future is looking bright for the school after a “heavy and intensive” intervention.

“When everyone’s on the same page working together, we can make progress and turn schools around,” he said.

“Students are now proud to be apart of Papakura High, and we’ve become a thriving part of the community.”

The intervention saw a principal fired in 2015 and introduced initiatives to rebrand the school and other programmes.

Craggs said at its lowest point the community had no trust in the school. and staff morale was low.

But now student are growing by almost 100 per cent a year and NCEA results are improving.

The school is hoping the Education Ministry will recommence a rebuild that was cancelled in 2015.

Share your New Zealand music memories...

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

It's NZ Music Month and New Zealand really has some beautiful songs from artists that we call our own.

Whether it's April Sun in Cuba, Don't Forget your Roots, or How Bizarre or Bic Runga's 'Sway' - songs have a way of unlocking memories and evoking old feelings.

In honour of NZ Music Month, share a New Zealand song or artist that is special to you and explain why.
