Poll: Is this bureaucracy gone mad? Should BYO alcohol be allowed at rural community halls and fundraisers?
Fundraising dance night to raise money for roof and wall repairs by the Makarau Hall Society was blocked by police, who said the group needed a special licence for the event, or it would be in breach of the Sale and Supply of Liquor Act.
The Society say they have had no issues in the past and are aghast at having to turn their hall into a makeshift pub.
They say the law could cause huge frustration for future events and other rural communities in New Zealand.
