Hi neighbours

Warkworth residents are invited to a public meeting at the Town Hall this Saturday to find out how new housing rules will affect the area.

Central Warkworth will be among the majority of Auckland suburbs that will be rezoned as 'mixed housing urban', allowing for up to three dwellings of three storeys without resource consent.

Rodney ward councillor Greg Sayers is hosting the meeting.

Sayers said he was concerned that the new 'medium density standards' did not take into account infrastructure constraints or large developments already planned.

He invited residents to "come along to find out more and help save Warkworth".

The meeting will start at 10am, this Saturday, June 18, at the Warkworth Town Hall.

Hi neighbours

Breast Cancer New Zealand is inviting people in north Rodney to come and have a chat with them when they visit in 'pinkie' the caravan next week.

BCNZ chief executive Ah-Leen Rayner said it would be a great chance for women to get advice and learn how they can reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

“One of Pinkie’s star attractions is Bessie, a life-like torso which shows the visible signs of breast cancer. Many women are often surprised to learn what a lump actually feels like, so we urge everyone to come along and find out for themselves," Rayner said.

They will be outside the Rodney Four Square in Wellsford on Wednesday, June 1, and New World in Warkworth on Thursday, June 2. They will be there both days from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Around 400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Waitematā DHB area every year, and around 70 will die from it. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women but research shows the earlier it is detected, the better the outcome, according to BCNZ.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ encourages women to be breast aware from the age of 20 and to consider starting mammograms at 40. Further advice can be sought by calling 0800 BC NURSE.

Kia ora neighbours. A revival of the defunct Waiwera thermal resort is in the works.

Waiwera Thermal Spa Resort used to host about 350,000 visitors a year, but closed in February 2018 and fell to ruin. Russian oligarch Mikhail Khimich, who ran the water park and Waiwera water bottling company, went into liquidation in 2019. Khimich reportedly died with Covid-19 in Russia in late 2021.

Urban Partners are now seeking expressions of interest from a potential joint venture partner.

“The site has extraordinary potential, recognised as a regional tourist attraction by the Auckland Unitary Plan and has zoning allowing for business, residential developments, health and wellness, tourism, hospitality and visitor accommodation," project director Doug Osborne said.

"Given the site’s proximity to Auckland, and the booming wellness industry, which is now worth $4.5 trillion, we expect the site to be of real interest to specialist operators from around the globe."
