A scary word that can make people uneasy—and for good reason. According to The Post, more than a third of New Zealand’s public services have recently faced it.
But why is restructuring the go-to strategy for driving change?
In The Post’s article 'Reaching for change: Is our public service obsessed with restructuring?', doctoral candidate Annika Naschitzki from Victoria University is trying to understand repetitive restructuring.
New Zealand’s public service is often seen as risk-averse, slow-moving, and stuck. But interviewed staff indicate that they want change, that change is needed ... just not through restructuring.
Naschitzki doesn’t mince words: “We always have the same issues, but we keep trying to fix the same problem with the same hammer we've been using for decades.”
Are we leaning too heavily on structural change when real transformation might lie elsewhere? Perhaps through training, resourcing, tools, and practice, as Naschitzki suggests.
What do you think?
Is restructuring the right tool for meaningful change, or just a habit we can’t seem to break?
If you are wary of restructuring, how can we do better?

OK, great. That's important to know.
BUT! The email does not contain the details. It's effectively just clickbait for neighbourly.
What the email should do, is clearly state the current issue (scam, recall, security warning etc) and after that there can be a 'read more' link. When I see a recall email, and it says "click here to find out what is being recalled..." I don't click. Why should I? Its a waste of time. I've got to fruit around logging in etc.
The email should get straight to the point and just say what is necessary, and have the 'more info' link to the atricle/ discussion etc for those who want it.
This is communications 101, but some people just don't get it.
Email provides value: "Hey, Woolworths are recalling baby food with datch dates in August. Click here for more info"
Those who buy baby food will click. Those it does not affect will be saved the bother.
Email provides no value: "Hey, Woolworths has recalled some products you may have purchased. Click here to find out more"
Now, everyone has to click to find out if it's baby food or vodka. the 74% of recipients that it doesn't apply to have had a piece of their day wasted.
See the difference? Or am I just overthinking it and being facetious?

This tower will dominate the skyline and be clearly visible from almost all parts of the Hatfield’s Beach, including across the northern valley towards Waiwera and southern valley to Silverdale. The tower will be visible from almost all the Beachwood Dr subdivision.
This spot is extremely popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and Sunday drivers as a stopping point to enjoy the beautiful view down to Hatfields Beach. Having this monopole installed right here seems a sacrilege.
Consultation with residents by 2degress has been minimal (and dismal) and we haven’t had sufficient opportunity to discuss with them the placing of this tower or the impact it will have on us. 2degrees position is “we’ve decided on the location and that’s final”.
We’re not against all cell towers and concede they’re a necessary part of modern life. However, there must be alternative positions that won’t impact beautiful Hatfields Beach as much as the proposed one.
The resource consent application number is LUC60454144. This is at APPLICATION stage NOW i.e. it’s in front of the planners, who are making decisions NOW. If you can help in any way, we’d be grateful.

Overall, Most Kiwis say they’re ‘not prospering’. But, according to Retirement Commission data, some members of our community (women, Māori, and Pacific people) are experiencing worsening financial positions at elevated rates.
Stats NZ tells us that food prices have jumped 4.6% since this time last year, with meat and dairy doing most of the damage. This jump is hitting us all, but groceries are just one part of the picture.
When basic costs keep climbing, the old cost-saving tricks — like bulk-buying or stockpiling on sale — don’t always work. Who can afford to spend more upfront when every dollar already has a job?
We want to know: What costs have caught you off guard the most? What are the expenses that feel impossible to juggle right now?
