Doug just called us from Springlands to say a kererū (wood pigeon) has crashed into the side of his sun room and died. Very sad.
Doug has never seen a kererū in town before and wonders if anyone else has noticed them about?

Join Brad and follow the journey of a Red Cross member volunteering in their community or a former refugee now living in New Zealand, while fundraising for us.
Choose the journey you want to follow and set your own challenge, including your distance and your fundraising target. Whether it’s 5,000 (approx. 4kms) or 10,000 (approx. 8kms) steps a day, whatever distance you choose make it a challenge for you and feel the added benefits of moving more and getting outside during the cooler months.
For those less able to walk or run, we also have other options for participating - get in touch to find out how Red Cross Journey can be adapted for you.
The more distance you cover, the more you’ll learn about the journey you have chosen to follow, through regular video updates.

It’s worth remembering your pets when you’re thinking about emergency preparation and including them in your household plan. Keep a copy of vaccination certificates in your grab bag; have a cage or a dog lead and a little food. Take your pets with you if you need to evacuate and think about how you’d take care of them.

As we age, the risk of having a fall increases. Those over the age of 65 have a 1 in 3 chance of having a fall and those over 80 it’s 1 in 2.
Having a fall can be devastating and can often result in a broken bone, which is painful and can take a long time to heal stopping us from doing the things we love.
The good news is that many falls are preventable. A new movement called Live Stronger for Longer aims to help reduce the risk of having a fall so we can live an independent and active life.
Having good strength and balance is key to staying on your feet. You can find approved community strength and balance classes in your area and practical information, advice, and resources on reducing the risk of falls.
Live Stronger for Longer and join the movement today.
Proudly brought to you by ACC, HQSC, MOH and your local community health providers.
