Despite these … View moreTo hear 21-year-old WelTec student Matthew Di Leva speak at Plimmerton Rotary on 20 June, you would think he was a young man with all his faculties. But in reality Matthew has suffered from birth from a combination of autism and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
Despite these difficulties Matthew leads an interesting and productive life. During his time at Wellington High School he had been presented with the Huxford Award, a prestige award given to students who displayed excellence in the face of adversity.
Matthew was a participant in Plimmerton Rotary’s Best Speaker Awards competition in 2016. Competition Convenor and Club member Julie McLagan noted that on that occasion Matthew had been awarded a Certificate of Merit, which he took to show his teacher at Wellington High School. The teacher was so impressed that she arranged for Matthew to give his presentation again, to the entire school. He received a standing ovation.
Special Olympics was another field of interest for Matthew, who in 2012 represented Wellington in the Trans-Tasman competition, winning silver and gold medals in running events. He had taken part again in 2016, winning a gold and silver medal as well as two fourth placings.
Matthew explained to Rotary Club members that what he loved more than anything was to spend time with people he loved and to enjoy good food. Like many Italian families Matthew’s family enjoyed frequent large gatherings of relatives and friends, usually around the family dining table. Matthew had four older brothers as well as countless aunties, uncles and cousins.
Recently Matthew had been best man at his brother Chris’s wedding. This meant that Matthew had to give a speech during the wedding breakfast. “I think I did very well. My Mum and my Aunty both cried. I’m not sure whether it was because they were so proud of me, or because they’d drunk a lot of wine.” Matthew had also spoken at his Mother’s 60th birthday (with similar results!)
Another memorable occasion had been Matthew’s 21st birthday. “There were about 100 people there. I looked around and thought to myself how lucky I was that the people I cared about the most were all together in the same room, laughing a lot and enjoying each other’s company.”
In May 2017 Matthew participated in the Rotary Best Speaker Awards in Wellington for a second time. This time the competition featured twelve special young people. Matthew gave an excellent presentation and was adjudged runner-up. He would soon be flying with his family to Christchurch to represent the North Island in the national Best Speaker Awards competition.

Each provided two contestants, who were welcomed and introduced … View moreIt was back to our favourite venue, the Anchor Church in Whitby, for the Porirua Secondary Schools Speech Contest on 16 June 2017.
Three secondary schools took part: Bishop Viard College, Porirua College, and Te Kura Maori o Porirua. Each provided two contestants, who were welcomed and introduced by Club President Peter Cox.
The order of speaking was decided by ballot, and the contest was run under international rules, with each contestant having a maximum speaking time of seven minutes.
Contestants chose their own topics, which tended towards the controversial. All spoke eloquently, and most spurned the use of notes. The large audience was attentive and appreciative of the students’ efforts. The students carried themselves with great pride and aplomb.
The club provided seven judges, plus a tie-breaker judge. While the judges deliberated, Mayor Mike Tana treated the audience to some reminiscences and shared a family secret with us.
All the contestants were presented with certificates of participation, and the three winners received handsome trophies, thanks to Harcourts Real Estate.
In first place was Murray Faivalu from Porirua Collete who spoke about, 'Stop trying to fit in - embrace your true self'.
Second was Siosiana Schaumkel from Bishop Viard College who spoke about, 'The Disease - racism'.
and third was Roseta Lopa from Porirua College who spoke about 'The influences of music'.
The College Cup was awarded to Porirua College.
Thanks are due to David Knight and Bill McAulay who Book presentation organised the event for the club, the judges, and Wendy Betteridge who gave each student a copy of her book “It’s your thoughts that count”.

"I was suspicious of the establishment at the time. You need to … View moreDr Lance O'Sullivan writes from the heart, and from the head: "It was 1996 and we were young parents. I was at medical school when I came upon an anti-immunisation pamphlet left in one of our lecture theatres.
"I was suspicious of the establishment at the time. You need to understand, I had grown up a welfare-dependent "half-caste" (I hate that term) boy living with his mother, escaping from a life of alcohol, crime and a level of violence that I would not tolerate for my daughters. An under-achiever, I was expelled from two secondary schools. I feel I had a reason to be angry at "the system".
"Then I became a father. It changed my life. I needed to be a responsible adult caring for a son, then a daughter – eventually seven children. We were young parents and wanted to do only the best for these precious beings.
"I read the pamphlet. It described "studies" in the Netherlands into communities that didn't look like mine, but I took little persuasion. I stated our second child, our little daughter Te Miringa, would not be immunised.
"At the time my wife Tracy was working as a nurse at the local medical centre and immunising children daily. Yet this was my protest against the establishment that I so mistrusted.
"Fifteen months later, we had a scare. Te Miringa became unwell with high fever and a body rash and the doctors were concerned as there was a measles outbreak locally. And I realised the information from the Netherlands did not reflect my reality.
"We got Te Miringa immunised."
