At first, it looked like an uphill battle for Simon Strombom to restore all the decaying military graves at Porirua's cemetery.

But after roughly 400 hours of scrubbing bronze and scraping moss, the former army major and his friend Melanie Macdonald respectfully restored the graves of about 85 servicemen and women scattered among camellia trees at the small, hilly cemetery north of Wellington.

Strombom, Macdonald and historian Allan Dodson, from Poriruawarstories.com, are now aiming to finish the job by raising $9000 to cover the cost of commemorative plaques. The money will also go towards restoring lead lettering and placing 85 permanent poppies at the graves before Armistice Day.
