Mid January: Sunny, very Dry & Cool

Murray from Paraparaumu

The New Year cloud has mostly gone and the weather in Kāpiti is now sunny and very dry. And the weeks of temperature-reducing southerlies may be on the way out, with 24ºC yesterday.

Kāpiti has been the warmest place in central New Zealand and one of the few that can claim January to have been a summer month to date. However, Paraparaumu has averaged only 20.5ºC and Waikanae 20.2 (more like November). The longtime average is 23.1ºC.

After a little light rain over the first few days of the month there’s been no rain at all, so rainfall is well below average, and over the last week with sun virtually all day, every day, sunshine is now average for the month.

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Environmental Protection Authority announced this week that a proposed mine in Central Otago (near Cromwell) is about to enter its fast-track assessment process. A final decision could come within six months, and if it’s approved, construction might start as early as mid-2026.

We want to know: Should mining projects like this move ahead?

Keen to dig deeper? Mike White has the scoop.
