Common pheasant/ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) - a very brief surprise encounter yesterday on the path beside the Waimanu Lagoon in Waikanae. Bird #72 in 2022."

"Swans in the winter air, A white perfection have" - W. H. Auden (he obviously never met a real swan, probably just admired them from a distance, and never actually had one in his face insisting on sharing his lunch).
Mute swan (Cygnus olor) at Henley Lake in Masterton - nobody has written a poem about this guy. Interesting aside - I read "Stop all the Clocks" at my father's funeral many years ago, it is still one of my favourites. Knowledge of swans aside, Auden was a genius. Bird #78 in 2022."
