Sleep in Pregnancy Study, Massey University

Clare from Camborne

Sleep HAPi – Sleep Health and Pregnancy Information
The Sleep/Wake Research Centre (SWRC) at Massey University, Wellington has started a new research study looking at sleep in pregnancy, specifically the links between sleep and antenatal depression.

Why are we doing this study?
• Every year approximately 10,000 NZ women are affected by depression during pregnancy – this also affects 10,000 babies and 10,000 families.
• Women who have previously had depression are twice as likely to relapse during pregnancy.
• Women who have depression in pregnancy are twice as likely to develop postnatal depression.
• Poor sleep increases the risk of experiencing depression and depression increases the risk of poor sleep, creating a negative cycle.
• Sleep disruption is almost unavoidable in pregnancy due to the enormous hormonal, physiological and emotional changes that occur.

So what are we doing?
We want to help women improve their sleep during pregnancy which will hopefully stabilise their mental health and lessen their vulnerability to depression.

Women can learn about sleep in general, why and what sleep changes occur in pregnancy and strategies and tips for improving sleep. Most importantly, women will be able to see what is happening to their own sleep as their pregnancy progresses.

If you, or someone you know:
• Are 13 weeks pregnant or less
• Have a history of depression
• Are having your/their first baby
• Lives in the Greater Wellington area

Then we would love to hear from you:
• FREE call: 0800 mumsleep (0800 6867 5337)
• FREE text: Text 'SLEEP' to 5222
• Email: mumsleep@massey.ac.nz

Recruitment for Sleep HAPi is continuing through until early 2018.
Participants will receive a $70 voucher at the end of the study.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
