Have your power prices gone up?

Electric Kiwi

Households are being told to shop around for better power deals as some power companies lifted their prices in April. On the flip side, smaller companies like Electric Kiwi won't be raising power prices this year and are challenging the big power companies to do the same.

Beach-front areas and estuaries which have experienced flooding in previous storms are at risk, and people in such areas have been asked to evacuate.

Our Mayor Sandra Goudie declared a Civil Defence emergency for Thames-Coromandel District, and Civil Defence is advising against travel to the Coromandel until Saturday given the severity of the storm. If you’re already here, don’t travel this afternoon and evening if you can avoid it.
“Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee called me last night and said if we needed any help I should call him,” Mayor Sandra says. Coromandel Member of Parliament Scott Simpson, in Wellington, had also expressed his support, Mayor Sandra says.
Three Defence Force Unimog vehicles plus personnel have been deployed to the Coromandel and are stationed at Thames, Tairua and Whitianga, at the fire stations, to assist if necessary.
Check our TCDC Facebook page for the latest updates on district roads, check NZTA’s website for State Highways , and go to www.metservice.com... for the latest weather forecast.
“We have a high degree of confidence that we have reached as many people as possible to leave the Coromandel, or go to safe ground or stay with family and friends,” says Thames Valley Civil Defence Controller Garry Towler.
Mr Towler says Powerco reports a noticeable decrease in power use, an indication that people have heeded the Civil Defence warning to avoid coming to the Coromandel in what would usually be a busy time for the Easter long weekend.
Civil Defence welfare centres are in operation for those seeking shelter, or just information:

• Coromandel St John Ambulance - 355 Tiki Road Coromandel
• Whitianga Town Hall – 22 Monk Street Whitianga
• Tairua Hall – 210 Main Road Tairua
• Whangamata Town Hall - 326 Port Road Whangamata
• Thames Civic Centre - 200 Mary Street Thames

Companion pets can be taken to all these shelters but must be under the owner’s control at all times.

Here is the latest update on roads and flooding as of 3pm Thursday.

SH25 - Thames Coast Road - is closed between Tararu and Preeces Point.
Colville Rd – Open to single lane at various places due to slips and vegetation
Te Kouma Rd – Open to single lane at various places due to slips
Waiomu Valley Road Ford is impassable due to flooding
Victoria No.2 Ford is impassable due to flooding
A report of a large pine tree at the summit of Port Charles Road in danger of falling across the road is being assessed.
Employers are being asked to consider the safety of their employees, especially if they have to travel some distance to go home, and consider letting staff go home early today.

“We want people to be off the roads before the rain really starts coming in from early this afternoon. Peak intensities are expected from this evening," says Waikato Civil Defence Group Controller Lee Hazlewood.

Whiritoa community likely to be cut off in the wake of Cyclone Cook

There is a high risk road access to the small coastal community of Whiritoa will be cut off in the wake of Cyclone Cook.
As the storm looms closer, residents are being advised to either be prepared to fend for themselves for up to seven days or self-evacuate to family and friends.
Hauraki District Civil Defence Controller Steve Fabish says the community was cut off by slips for a number of days following the Tasman Tempest last month and there is a strong likelihood this could happen again, considering the way the storm is tracking. Unlike surrounding low-lying Eastern Coromandel coastal areas currently being evacuated, the threat of severe tidal inundation in Whiritoa is low.
“At this stage the storm is expected to hit the Coromandel Peninsula from 3pm until midnight. Our advice to travellers is stay away from the area until late Friday or Saturday at least,” said Fabish.

Kaimanawa water supply likely to be cut off
There is a high likelihood water supply to the Kaimanawa community, near Hikutaia in Hauraki will be affected and/or cut off during the coming storm. Residents are reminded the community’s permanent boil water notice is still in place. A water tanker is being moved on site in case water is needed for tomorrow's milking. Drinking water will also be available, but residents are advised to stock up on supplies as well, just in case.

Emergency Operating Centre established

Hauraki Civil Defence has established an emergency operating centre and the team is currently monitoring the situation across the Hauraki District.

Thames-Coromandel District Council Mayor, Sandra Goudie has declared a civil defence emergency for the district.

"There are three main reasons for declaration, the severity of the storm that is approaching, and it is potentially a category 4-5 storm with a high likelihood that Cyclone Cook will hit landfall on the Coromandel Peninsula sometime tomorrow."

"In addition as a result of the storm we have concerns for all residents and visitors on the Coromandel who are residing in low coastal areas and may need to implement evacuation, and thirdly it is holiday time and traditionally hundreds flock to the Coromandel and we must seriously advise people to stay away until at least Saturday and if people do decide to make the journey they must be prepared to be turned back, isolated and have their journeys severely disrupted."

"We are just seeing the fringes of the weather event, and we still have two more days to go," says Mayor Sandra.

Civil Defence would like to remind everyone to be prepared to potentially be isolated, without power, and you may need to make alternative arrangements if you are planning on travelling.

Now is also a good time to check your emergency survival kits and getaway kits.

Have plenty of food and water for at least three days.
Battery powered lighting is the safest and easiest and you should check all batteries every three months. Do not use candles as they can tip over in earthquake aftershocks or in a gust of wind. Do not use kerosene lamps, which require a great deal of ventilation and are not designed for indoor use.
First aid kit and essential medicines.
Blankets or sleeping bags.
Pet supplies.
If possible, make sure your mobile phones are charged.

The Coromandel is on a full weather alert with the high possibility that Cyclone Cook will make landfall on the Coromandel in the next 24 hours.

Civil Defence is advising everybody to stock up on the supplies and medication today that will last at least 3 days.

"Everyone needs to be in a safe place and be prepared to sit it out for 24 hours or more," says Thames Valley Civil Defence Controller Garry Towler.

"Those planning to travel to or from the Coromandel from tonight through to Saturday, please delay your travel as the liklihood of slips and road closures is very high," says Mr Towler.

Residents need to be prepared for:
Flooding - the Coromandel is saturated from previous weather events
Multiple slips and debris flow (floods on steroids)
The likelihood of power loss
Road closures - both local Council roads and NZTA State Highways

Those in low lying coastal areas may see large waves of 5 metres or more and storm surges. The storm surge will impact beaches, rivers and estuaries.

"The beaches and rivers will be dangerous places to be in the next few days especially with the high level of water table saturation and the amount of debris that could wash down into the tributaries," says Mr Towler.
