Heirloom Tomato Plants and Other Vegetables at Waikanae and Otaki Community Markets
Spring planting time is coming up and we'll have our first selection of seedlings available at the markets this weekend. If you have a greenhouse, veggie pod or a warm sheltered spot, we have the plants to get you started with 30+ tomato varieties ready now and more on the way in coming weeks.
In all, we grow over 60 types of heirloom tomatoes. These are grown from seed passed down through the generations over decades (centuries in some cases!) and cherished for their superior flavour. Many of our tomatoes are not readily available elsewhere and you certainly wont find them on supermarket shelves! A range of sizes, shapes and colours to suit every taste.
We also have some strong well-established seedlings of our much sought-after Partenon Zucchini. This is a self-fertile variety that is especially suited to this time of year when bees are less active. Partenon is a good-cropper, with a relatively compact growth habit compared with other varieties and an excellent flavour.
Plants are ready now, so we aim to be at the markets this weekend whatever the weather.
Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
