When mentoring young people, Olivia quickly learnt being adaptable was one of the biggest ways to connect with the younger students.
For some students, they were reluctant and didn’t want to partake in activities, she found sitting down and having general conversations opened up students and changed the view on mentors to be relatable and less intimidating. This encouraged students to interact not only inside the classroom but during lunch breaks and after school.
One of the biggest takeaways from being a stars peer mentor for Olivia was the opportunities that came from the community project and doing something positive for other people. Meeting people through the community and the Graeme Dingle Foundation allowed Olivia to get her very first corporate job at Kerridge & Partners which is something she will always appreciate and remember.

Having said that they will listen to the community and that they are not in office to rubber stamp staff recommendations, the commissioners showed that they mean what they say when they turned down the staff recommendation that would have seen hundreds of carparks removed from the Pilot Bay and … View moreHaving said that they will listen to the community and that they are not in office to rubber stamp staff recommendations, the commissioners showed that they mean what they say when they turned down the staff recommendation that would have seen hundreds of carparks removed from the Pilot Bay and Marine Parade precincts. The reason they gave for that decision was that it didn't have community support.They then went on to give recognition to a community proposal for a shared boardwalk by putting it forward for a feasibility study in the Long Term Plan.
Many will support those decisions and others will oppose them. But, putting that debate aside, the point to be noted is that the commissioners didn't merely pay lip service to the community's concerns and wishes, they listened, weighed them up then did something about acting on them. In the past, the majority of our elected councillors have not done that: they have simply pretended to listen and then danced to the tune played by the CEO and staff. The majority who tried to do their best for the community were often derided and, in some cases, abused by the mayor and some fellow councillors.
In her briefing to the commissioners Minister Mahuta instructed them to "determine a mechanism for engaging with the community." What better mechanism could there be than COMMUNITY BOARDS. Residents need to have a greater measure of power put into their hands. If that's the way you feel, tell the commissioners when the review comes out in May or June that you want community boards for Tauranga. You can also make a pre-emptive strike by contacting the commissioners right now and telling them your wishes.

I know a homeless Maori family of 5 who have been struggling for about a year to find a house to rent and who currently sleep in tents in the park.
Like us, you may have a house with two or three spare bedrooms, but are concerned that if you let a family move in until they can find a more permanent place to rent, it could be a very long wait, and you are just not willing to make that kind of commitment or take such a risk.
Perhaps, if you were part of a group of 4 or 5 people or more who were willing to take turns for 2-4 weeks housing a family such as that above, you would be able to express your concern for the homeless in a really significant way.

There are 110 community boards in NZ. Tauranga has always dodged having to have one.
Boards are best described as grass roots local government.The job of the board members, who are elected every 3 years, is to represent and advocate for local needs and wishes. And, the council is bound by statute to pay attention!
You do not have to join boards; you are a part of them simply by being a member of the community.
Board members are not councillors and do not have a seat at the council table. However, they often take part in council deliberations that affect their community. They can actually play a meaningful part in the decision making process.
Boards are funded by the council and are provided with assistance from council staff where it is needed. The members also have access to council resources and information in a way that is not available to other community groups.
Tauranga residents are no longer represented by local councillors, they have no-one to speak on their behalf. And, this situation could possibly continue until 2025. We NEED community boards!
When the review proposal comes out in May or June, have your say:
TELL THE COUNCIL THAT TAURANGA RESIDENTS WANT COMMUNITY BOARDS.
