I love supporting such an amazing charity. They provide a home away from home for families from all over New Zealand whose children require specialist medical treatment in another city. During an extremely difficult time, the houses allow families to stay together offering not only accommodation but a supportive environment for the whole family while the child receives care in hospital. What do we offer: - Free painting time, Art Tuition with experienced Artists Demonstrations and tips, a great book and DVD library, Workshops, Social interaction, Exhibitions, Competition, Plein Air days, a weekly newsletter, free tea and coffee available; make it yourself and bring along your lunch for a sit down and chat from mid-day.
What we use: - Our members work in watercolour, pastels, acrylics, oils, pencil/pen and charcoal and mixed media.

Popular with people of all age, indoor bowls is a challenging game that can be learned easily, although it takes dedication to be the best.
Manukau City Indoor Bowling Association President Roy Ayris says indoor bowls has an appeal that cuts across all ages. “It’s a fully inclusive sport that welcomes people of all ages,” he says.
Anyone can learn how to bowl with a few minutes of instructions. But because consistency is somewhat more difficult to master, it provides the players excitement and motivation to improve. “It is therefore ideal for the whole family or groups of friends,” adds Roy.
The Association holds its events at the participating clubs you can find these on our website. The best way to find out if you have a flair for this wonderful sport is to turn up at any of the venues and have a go. The only requirement is you arrive in a pair of flat-soled shoes, and your local club will supply the rest. Coaching is available at all clubs.* With a range of clubs to choose from, you and your family can play on the preferred day of the week at your convenience. The Association holds all its tournaments on Saturdays. Players can progress up to the national level.
Roy, who has been playing indoor bowls for more than 40 years, says the Association runs with the support provided by the local community. “I would like to offer a big thank you to • Summerset on the Park • Acacia Cove Village • Minishifts • Susan Dyson, Professionals • Bupa Wattle Downs for their sponsorships.”
*Membership is required to play in the Cosmopolitan clubs. The annual membership fee is less than it costs to buy dinner at a decent restaurant. The bonus is that the club houses are excellent venues for freshly prepared home cooked meals, well priced drinks, and loads of exciting events year round. With the Auckland economy booming, there is an ever growing requirement of qualified staff in a number of roles that include event security, patrol security, retail security, community security, bar door work or employment as a bodyguard.
What's more, the Levels 2 and 3 programmes are free to eligible teenagers under the Youth Guarantee scheme and you'll get a travel allowance as well.
Zaya from Henderson is among those students who have taken advantage of the course to brighten their job prospects. The 20 year old says Skills Update is just what she needed to get her life back on track. "This is way better than school," she explains. "It's more like a family where you can relax and study at your own pace. Our tutor explains everything in an easy to understand manner and the course is flexible so I can juggle studies and family commitments."
Zaya is currently exploring a number of options before she enters the job market.
Quinton Te Ahu from Sunnyvale shares Zaya's positive outlook. "Initially I found the going hard, but with support from my tutor I carried on. I now enjoy coming to class because I know I'll have a great job at the end of it," says the 17 year old.
Tutor Garry Miller agrees both Zaya and Quinton have become more confident, disciplined and focussed individuals compared to when they started. "It doesn't matter what shape they come in, when they leave they are transformed individuals," he says.
A retired police sergeant who joined the Police in 1969, Garry currently volunteers with the Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services division, training tomorrow's police recruits through the Auckland Safety Community Patrol.
He says the course is challenging and that's why the students love it. "Plus they know it's a good industry to be in."
And he assures: "If they show the dedication to succeed, I can guarantee them a job."
