Pongaroa residents issued with boil water notice
Tararua District Council has issued a boil water notice for Pongaroa.
A council spokesman said it was a proactive measure. No contamination has been detected, but chlorine levels in the town's water system were very low.
The council expects it to take a few days before the chlorine levels in the system returned to the right level. Once that happens, the notice will be reassessed. An update will be available on Monday.
Until further notice, residents are advised to boil water before drinking it, making ice, food preparation and brushing teeth.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and pregnant women may be particularly at risk. The council says people in those categories should check with their doctors about drinking the water. Read more here
