May's Weather to Mid Month
The first week of the month was unusually cool, with the first couple of days being the coldest of the year. This was brought about by particularly strong southerly winds, with relatively little rain, but followed a particularly summery April so was a bit of a shock. However, by the second week a warm front had arrived with it reaching a summery 20C, bringing some useful rain amounting to 23mm. This last week was mild, sunny and dry despite negative forecasts. Rain about now would be good, but it doesn’t seem likely, although our neighbours over the ranges will almost certainly get some.
For the month to-date the overall temperatures are running slightly above average and rainfall well below average, with sunshine about normal.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
