At Hokio Beach this morning there was not a shore-bird to be seen because of the abhorrent noise and behaviour of people on 2 & 4 wheel motor bikes. Frustrated, I wandered into the tide to have a look at a log (about 2.5 metres long) which the waves were washing in to the beach. What I discovered astonished me. At first I thought I was looking at 2 forms of sea-life, shellfish and a strange sort of seaweed. But then I discovered that what I thought were shellfish were actually attached to ends of monstrous worm-like arms which moved around. I'd never seen anything like it. Co-incidentally, a couple happened to be walking by and the husband had knowledge of sea life. Apparently, what I had thought were shellfish were actually the heads and filtering system for a monstrous worm-like life form, the tail-ends of which were anchored to the log. The sad part of the story is that the creature will not survive now because, to continue to live, it needs to be under the ocean surface. I remain amazed and grateful for what I have seen and photographed, though not to the extent that could ever approve of what those people on 4-wheel motor bikes where doing to the beach and the dunes.

Because it’s been seen so rarely, scientists still know very little about it. But its striking features are already sparking debate about whether it should be given special protection, and some have even argued it could become an icon species for Papua New Guinea.
At a time when we so often hear about species disappearing, the return of this little shark is a reminder that nature can surprise us ... and that there’s always reason to hope.

The temperature only reached 15℃, with the longtime average for September being 16℃. It is possible, of course, for the difference to be made-up in the remaining two weeks should there be a weather change.
We also continue to experience August’s dry weather with only 23mm to-date, leaving nearly 50mm required to meet the longtime September average. I guess, If we had received all the forecast possible rain and thunderstorms that never arrived we wouldn’t be in this situation, however, it doesn’t look too good for the approaching summer with drought a possibility.
Sunshine hours are running slightly above average, and after months of unusually calm weather we have had some (equinoctial?) wind, typical for time of year.
Yesterday (Sept. 15) was our warmest day this season at 17℃, with today approaching 20℃!

Luster is an overglaze, that is applied over the vitrified, glaze-fired piece and requires a third firing. Luster is made of particles of real gold suspended in a liquid medium. Then it's fired in order to burn off the organic binder.
No maker's mark on the back of the plate.
