Metservice warned big waves were recorded on the capital's South Coast and Eastbourne. Wellington Region Emergency Management Office had reported that debris had already washed up along the coast as of 10:30.
All Interislander Services between Picton and Wellington today have been cancelled, with today's Bluebridge sailings cancelled and tomorrow's early morning services also scratched.

In Golden Bay, … View moreKa rawe Nelson Tasman! Well done on the stellar vaccination effort. We've just got data in and can tell you how we're going on a suburb-by-suburb basis. Here are some highlights from around the region, with percentages based on the population eligible for the vaccine:
In Golden Bay, 64.3% have the first vaccination, 49.8% have the second.
In Takaka, 64.8% have their first, 49.8% have the second.
Motueka East and West have a little rivalry going on, in Motueka West 66.4% have the first, 47.1% have the second. In Motueka East 78.3% have the first and 62.1% have the second.
In Richmond Central, 76.1% have their first shot and 53.6% are fully vaccinated.
In Nelson city, The Wood is racing ahead with 84% on a single dose and 64.8% are fully vaccinated.
Over in Victory, 76.1% have had their first vaccine and 54.1% have had their second.
We'll have a dive into the data and see what insights we can make over the coming days, so stay tuned to the paper or website for more.
