So it's that dreaded time again... hay fever season. So what is it and what can you do to get through it?

Hay fever is an exaggerated immune system response to an allergen like pollen, dust mites and pets to name a few. Your system overreacts, thinking that these allergens are dangerous to your system and need to be attacked and expelled.

Symptoms can include:
- runny and or stuffy nose
- sneezing
- itchy eyes, watery eyes
- frequent throat-clearing
- rabbit-like movements of the nose
- repeated nosebleeds
- headaches because of pressure from inside the nose
- frequent earaches, fullness in the ear, ear infections or hearing loss
- chronic cold without much fever
- dark circles under the eyes

Treatment options

Antihistamines (in the form of tablets, nasal sprays or eye drops), Nasal sprays, including decongestants and steroids
Natural health products ranging from tablets to nasal sprays.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
