Annual Plan 2025-26 sets out all the planning, projects, rates, and spending for the coming year. It is in line with our Long Term Plan (LTP) focus on infrastructure, planning with growth in mind, and making sure income covers costs. We are seeking feedback on 3 topics about rates.

Local Water Done Well (LWDW) is about how water infrastructure and services are managed. We're proposing two options: an "in-house business unit", or teaming up with neighbouring Councils for a Northland Council Controlled Organisation (CCO). Our preferred option is the in-house business unit.

Consultation on both topics is open until 5:00pm on Friday 2 May 2025. A series of 3 "drop in session" events begins on Thursday 8 April 2025 in Ruakākā (details are on the Have Your Say pages).

They may contact you by email, text, or phone, claiming:
🔹 You're owed a tax refund and must provide your bank details to receive it.
🔹 You owe tax and need to pay immediately to avoid legal trouble.

How to stay safe:
✅ Don’t click on links in emails or texts - log in to your myIR account directly.
✅ Check the sender - official IRD emails always end in @ird.govt.nz.
✅ Be cautious with texts - IRD only sends messages from four-digit codes, not
regular phone numbers.

This is just a precautionary measure for now, particularly as we have some rain forecast over the next few days. However, if we don’t see some sustained heavy rain in the next few weeks, we may ask people to start actively conserving water.

How can we make Whangārei more welcoming for newcomers? Come and help us plan for this at our second community hui:

📅 Tuesday 8 April, 3:30pm until 5:30pm, at the Central Library

There will be two more opportunities to meet at the Central Library:
📅 Tuesday 10 June 2025, 3:30pm-5:30pm, and
📅 Tuesday 12 August 2025, 3:30pm-5:30pm.

“We are gathering feedback from newcomers, ethnic communities, organisations and the wider Whangārei community to help draft the Welcoming Plan,” says Council Welcoming Communities Coordinator Devika Shukla. “Your voice matters, and we want to hear your thoughts, experiences and ideas. This is a collaborative effort to create a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone.”

The interactive, all-welcome meeting will focus on building meaningful connections between newcomers and existing communities, to help form a shared sense of pride about being part of a culturally rich and vibrant community.

📸 captions: Our first hui in February was a blast and we want to get more people along to contribute. The Welcoming Plan aims to promote healthier, happier and more productive communities by welcoming newcomers and embracing their cultural needs, like what we saw at Taste Whangārei earlier this month.

We’re also running a Welcoming Plan survey and we would love to hear from more people! Do that here: www.wdc.govt.nz...
