Autumn Harvesting

Di Celliers from Community Fruit Harvesting

Guavas, figs, quince, pears, apples and feijoas are now being harvested in the Auckland region. Community Fruit Harvesting volunteers pick this fruit, that is growing unwanted or to excess in people's back garden or orchards. We have volunteers who turn some of the fruit into jams, jellies, chutneys, sauces and give the fresh fruit and preserves to food banks, refuges, Age concern, etc. Would you like to help us? If you would like to learn how, we have people locally that can teach you. It is so rewarding to turn unwanted fruit into delicious preserves to give to those in need. Every bit help, even if it is just to wash some of the fruit and put it into bags for the freezer.
For all the new immigrants, elderly or lonely : you could get together and have a regular preserving afternoon - joining in a social occasion, but also helping your community. If you would like to help and we DO need you, then please contact pickfruit@xtra.co.nz

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
