On Saturday 15th April, we’ll be switching traffic onto the new Haywards Interchange. If you’re travelling along State Highway 2 or State Highway 58, this will change how you move through the area.

For State Highway 2 traffic, the main change you’ll notice is there will be no more traffic signals. If you’re wanting to get onto or off State Highway 58, you’ll use the new elevated roundabout. There will be plenty of signage to guide you, and a lower speed limit in place to allow everyone to get used to the new layout.

For more information, plus a diagram and quick animation guide, please click here or call the project team on 0800 007 425.

People in Lower Hutt who normally receive unchlorinated drinking water may notice a slight smell and taste of chlorine in their water from this afternoon.

As part of routine water testing carried out on water from the Waterloo wellfield (Lower Hutt), a sample from a bore in the wellfield has returned a positive e-coli result.

It is important to note that this test is an indicator test and further testing is required to confirm any contamination. While this further testing is being carried out, chlorine will be added to the water supply for Lower Hutt as a precautionary measure. We’ll continue to chlorinate the water until we have clearance from Regional Public Health.

Other water quality tests taken at the same time have returned negative results.

The water already in pipes is safe to drink and there is no need to boil water.

The public artesian wells at Buick Street in Petone, and Dowse Square in central Lower Hutt remain open as a source of unchlorinated drinking water.

We’ll be carrying out tests on multiple samples at other reservoirs and points in the water network, and provide updates here as soon as those results come in (late tomorrow).

We've also got information on our website about this: huttcity.govt.nz

A new approach to the tsunami threat has been met with apathy by Lower Hutt residents.
Instead of relying on sirens, the council is encouraging people to respond to a large earthquake by moving inland but turnout to the city council's recent public information meetings to discuss the new approach has been poor. What do you think of our current warning system - could it be improved? And how can we get more people invested in safety? Comments may be used in the Hutt News unless you state otherwise with NFP (not for print)
