Grey teals like to perch
I admire grey teals – I’ve always been a sucker for birds clad in shades of grey browns where the interest lies in their behaviour. These guys, with demonic red eyes and about two-thirds the size of a mallard, like to perch up trees to rest – they like nothing better than an almost horizontal branch or tree trunk stretched out over calm water for a siesta. It’s like they don’t like having wet feet. If I were a duck I would be a grey teal/tētē moroiti (Anas gracilis).

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝
In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”
We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?
Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
