Mr December
Meet Mister December in my Wild birds of New Zealand 2022 calendar. He obviously didn't get the memo about being a "stately royal spoonbill". I'm in a hide at Pauatahanui, but he totally knows I'm there and is clacking his just desserts spoon at me in case I was thinking of doing anything funny. Royal spoonbill/kōtuku ngutupapa (Platalea regia).
The calendars are a large A3 size and $28 each. I've heard they make a lovely Christmas present or you can keep it for yourself and have this handsome lad hanging in your kitchen for a whole month. Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
