A VIB annual visitor - White heron/kōtuku
A graceful and nationally critical (less than 200 birds) very important visitor has graced the Hutt Estuary in late Summer/early autumn for the last few years - the white heron/kōtuku. Sometimes he likes to wander up the Te Mome Stream where he has apparently made friends with some of the residents there. Here he is this past April - waiting out the rain on his boat.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
