Dear neighbours, after reading about our search for New Zealand's most impressive and artistic wood piles in the May 2025 issue, Auckland's Anne Stephens Whitcombe sent us this photo that she had snapped while on holiday in Norway. The Environmental Protection Authority announced this week that a proposed mine in Central Otago (near Cromwell) is about to enter its fast-track assessment process. A final decision could come within six months, and if it’s approved, construction might start as early as mid-2026.

Great news for Southland adventurers! One of the toughest stretches of the 3,039km Te Araroa trail (from Kaitaia all the way down to Bluff) might soon get an upgrade.
Te Araroa Trust is aiming to raise $30,000 to kickstart a raised timber boardwalk in the Longwoods Forest, making this challenging section a little more enjoyable for future walkers.
