Just when we thought the cost of living couldn't climb any higher...it does. While things like fuel prices are out of our control, many of us are looking for small, practical ways to stretch our dollars a bit further. So let’s put our heads together!

Over the next little while, we’ll be sharing tips to help you save money — and we’d love to hear yours too. What’s working for you right now?

Here are a few ideas to get started:
🎉 Plan ahead for the year (birthdays, events, travel) to avoid surprise costs
🪙 Check out $2 shops for everyday items like stationery, baking paper, foil, and cling wrap - often much cheaper than the supermarket
🐖 Bring back the piggy bank and save your loose change
🔨 DIY where you can - like mowing the lawn instead of paying someone
💵 Set a daily budget before heading out and stick to it (cash can help!)
🧴 Stretch household products by diluting things like shampoo or dishwashing liquid

Got a tip that’s helping you save? Share it below, the tip might make a huge difference to someone else.

We understand that the global fuel situation is causing people to feel nervous, and some are concerned it could lead to an increase in fuel theft and related crime ⛽ Nationally, Police is watching closely for any trends around fuel theft and associated offences.

Police will remain visible in our communities and will respond to any incidents as they arise.

We know many people feel more reassured if they know what steps they can take to help keep themselves and their property safe.

🔸Keep your car locked in a garage.
🔸If you can’t park your car in a garage then park it on your property with the fuel cap close to the wall or another vehicle to restrict access.
🔸Have security/sensor lighting on around your car, fuel tanks and fuelling areas.
🔸Try to keep fuel out of sight, and ensure fuel tanks are secured and locked to restrict theft and tampering.
🔸Report all suspicious behaviour or incidents to Police: 105 or 105.police.govt.nz for non-urgent matters; or 111 for emergency situations that are happening now.

A new scam is out there with scammers claiming to be ANZ through WhatsApp, texts, emails, and phone calls. Their goal? To get your personal or banking info — and your money.

ANZ have shared details about how to protect yourself, and these apply to any message from your bank.

Think twice before acting and...
✅Double-check who’s contacting you. If something feels off, don’t reply.
✅Contact the bank directly using official details (their website or app) - not the message you received.
✅Don’t click links in unexpected or suspicious messages.
✅Never share sensitive info like codes, passwords, or banking logins - they will never ask for these.
✅Don’t allow remote access or screen sharing on your device, even if they claim to be from a trusted organisation.

ANZ shared that they may contact you to check a transaction but they will never ask for access to your device, security codes, or to move your money.

Police investigating a string of burglaries and fuel thefts in Southland have arrested a 17-year-old youth and say the swift response should be a warning to anyone considering stealing fuel.

Acting Inspector Mel Robertson, Invercargill’s Area Prevention Manager, says several rural thefts occurred overnight on Tuesday 7 April, with significant quantities of fuel among the items taken.
“Six vehicles were stolen, along with hundreds of litres diesel and petrol, but Police have been able to recover five of the vehicles thanks to GPS tracking.
“Our enquiries are still ongoing, and we can’t rule out further arrests, but I want to acknowledge the swift response from frontline staff and detectives that led to yesterday’s arrest.
“We won’t tolerate this offending here. It’s senseless stuff and causes significant distress and upheaval to the lives of hard-working people.
“Anyone who is thinking of stealing fuel or vehicles should take this as a warning - we will act immediately and use our resources to find and prosecute anyone involved.”

The youth was arrested after a search warrant was executed at an Invercargill property.
He has been charged with burglary relating to the theft of fuel from a tractor and further charges are being considered. He is due to appear in the Invercargill Youth Court later this month.

An 18-year-old at the property was also arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods. He is due to appear in the Invercargill District Court on 14 April.
Nine 20 litre cans containing different fuels have been recovered and enquiries are ongoing.

“Unfortunately, this is a timely reminder for everyone, especially those in rural communities, to look at their security, especially around fuel,” Acting Inspector Robertson says.
