Interested in a social history of infectious diseases? The newest course in our Junior Lecturer series, which gives young people an opportunity to share their passions, experience and knowledge, is entitled “From Plague to Protest: A Social History of Disease.”

This four-session course offers an accessible overview of disease from both biological and social perspectives. We will begin with discovering how the body defends itself against invaders, and then pivot to examining the invaders themselves. Armed with this knowledge, we will be able to explore how diseases have played out in society, from the Middle Ages through to the present day. Along the way, we will examine some fascinating case studies and the individuals who have played pivotal roles in either furthering our understanding in the battle of organisms or in stymying public health efforts.

For more info on this and our other courses in world art & architecture, environment and biodiversity, history, language (Arabic, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Thai and Urdu), world literature, philosophy, and world cinema, visit our website at <earthdiverse.org.nz>.

We specialise in hybrid courses with both an in-person and distance learning component via Zoom, so no matter where you live in the world you can take one of our courses!

Many got richer during & after getting the subsidy. I worked for one of them. Many laid staff off before or as soon as the Subsidy ran out. I know all about that as well because my employer laid me and another employee off as soon as subsidy expired! Anyone know of any employers abusing the wage subsidy last year or since, please do the right thing, Contact Ministry for Social Development and lodge your complaint. It's tax payers money that these employers got rich on while some of us, that were laid off, have and still are suffering while trying to survive on a benefit.

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

Jamie Wall. Allen & Unwin, 2019. 368 pages, excellent condition

What happened to the All Blacks at the 2019 Rugby World Cup?

They were aiming for their third title in a row. A win would have capped a decade of dominance for the team and provided a fitting end to the careers of Steve Hansen and Kieran Read.

But it turned out to be a much tougher challenge, and ended in crushing failure. Heroics & Heartbreak is Jamie Wall's story of the campaign, from someone who was there every step of the way.
