When HMS Miranda arrived off the coast of Pūkorokoro on the shores of the Firth of Thames in 1863, she brought the Waikato War with her.
On the 160th anniversary of the invasion on the western side of the Firth, commemorations were held at the site where Ngāti Pāoa members fought to defend their homeland from invading British marines, triggering a crossfire that resulted in violent shelling by the warship, forcing those of the north Waikato kāinga to flee.

Grant Kilby has always loved camping. His mum was director of health at the YMCA, and he would attend YMCA camps in the school holidays. “I think it was mandatory that I was there,” he jokes.
